How To Choose The Right Movies For Your Child

Posted on: 23 September 2015

Choosing a movie to see with your child can be difficult because you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices. There are many valid movies from several decades ago, along with the dozens of children's movies that come out every year. Here are some tips for choosing movies that will keep your child satisfied, entertained, and happy.

1. Figure Out What Your Child is Scared Of

Lots of children's movies involve dead parents. If your child has a particular fear about losing you or your spouse, then you might want to hold off on showing him or her the Lion King or any other movie that features a parent dying on-screen. Instead, look for movies that avoid this particular fear. Kids can be funny about what they are afraid of and this fear might not make total sense to you. Talk to your child ahead of time about movies that he or she found scary and why those movies were scary. Doing this will allow you to figure out which movies to avoid.

2. Judge Your Child's Attention Span

Next, you are going to want to judge your child's attention span accurately. This is important because it will allow you to avoid going to see a movie and having to deal with your child being more interested in throwing popcorn and crawling on the floor than the movie itself. To judge your child's attention span, put in different types of movies and see how long it takes for your child to get bored. If your child gets bored in 45 minutes or less and wants to do something more active, stick to movies that you can easily turn off and on again without having to worry about losing any of the plot. Episodic movies that have many short stories within them are great for children like this.

If your child is slightly older, he or she might be able to sit through a longer movie with rapt attention. If this is the case, you can safely choose movies that are 90 to 120 minutes long.

3. Go With Your Child's Interests and Favorite Art Style

Some types of art styles really draw a child in and if you want to be a successful movie-chooser, you might want to take the art styles into consideration. If your child loves anime, then choose movies that are also in the same Japanese-style animation. If your child loves 3D animated movies, make sure that you choose many of those.

Then, assess your child's interests. If your child is more interested in cars and trucks, he or she might enjoy a movie that involves these items over one that has princesses or pirates.

For more information, talk to your child. He or she will also have ideas about what kind of movies you should rent next. Also, check out sites like Rotoscopers for info about upcoming animated movies your kid will enjoy.

After that night, I had a new love in my life - it was and still is the theater. If you have kids and haven't yet shown them the beauty and wonder in the theater, it is time to do it. There are shows for every age and gender. This blog will show you several ways to introduce your kids to the world of theater.
